What to Wear to Your Engagement Session

One of the questions my couples ask me most often is, “what should I wear for my engagement session?” This is an important question to ask! Seriously, your attire has a big impact on the way your photos turn out and your confidence during your photoshoot. Here are some of my tips to help!

Wear something that feels familiar and comfortable. Even if you’re buying new clothes for your session, buy a silhouette that you already love or a color you know works for you. solid neutral colors are a great place to start for a classic final look.

Try on your outfit options and have someone take a picture of you. It sounds crazy, but just a quick iPhone picture can help you visualize better than the mirror will.

Think about where and how you’ll be using your engagement pictures. Are you doing Save the Dates? Are you planning to hang them in your house? Having an idea of where these photos will go will determine the colors and the vibe you decide to go with.

Go for colors that coordinate rather than match.

A good fit counts for a lot! Wearing an outfit that’s fits perfectly not only looks great on camera, but will make you feel that much more confident.

Consider where we’re doing your portrait session. Is it a sunrise session in Monterey or are we doing at Marin headlands? Your location will inform how dressed up your look will be as well as the colors and textures you choose.

PETS ARE WELCOME WHEREVER I AM  and are always such a fun addition to the day and always to the photos. Props don’t have to be cheesy to be a beautiful addition to your gallery and memories of that day!

the best thing you can do to ensure you have photos that feel like YOU, is to arrive at your session ready to have fun and to treat it like a date night. Compliments, jokes, and laughs are welcome.

hair & makeup

If you are wondering whether you should set up appointments for hair and makeup for your session, my answer is do what makes you feel best. If you love getting your hair and makeup done and always feel like a queen after, then you should absolutely do it! Maybe that’s not you, but you don’t do your makeup very much and are considering getting it done. That’s great, too! I would only suggest that you do a trial run in advance to make sure it is something you know you will love in your photos. I don’t think getting your hair and makeup done professionally is a must but looking and feeling yourself is.
